"Europe Dies or Is Reborn in Sarajevo"

For its 25th season, the cultural association Teatro Pratiko—celebrating 25 years of activity—has launched a new production project within the CRATere "time" festival that also reflects on the passage of time: "Forum Langer", marking the 30th anniversary of Alexander Langer’s death.

Nazario Zambaldi from Teatro Pratiko in Merano and Alessandro Argnani from Teatro delle Albe in Ravenna will present "Forum Langer" on May 9th in celebration of Europe Day in Merano at the School Village, together with secondary schools in both Italian and German (Gandhi Institute, Einstein Realgymnasium, von Miller Technical High School, Ritz Hospitality Institute, Marconi Vocational School, Carl Wolf Middle School).

The project’s partners include, alongside the Province of Bolzano and Italian Culture Department (which funds the production), the Environmental Protection and University Department of Reggio Emilia. On May 9th—Europe Day—the project will also be presented by Sabina Langer in Reggio Emilia during the "ITE lectio est – Educational Resonances" conference at the Department of Education and Humanities, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

"FORUM LANGER" includes the production of two theatre performances:

  • "Europe Dies or Is Reborn in Sarajevo" (2025), to mark 30 years since Langer's passing

  • "The Earth on Loan" (2026), celebrating 80 years since his birth

These will engage schools and communities, in an initiative by Teatro Pratiko in collaboration with the Inter-Azioni citizenship workshops in schools, promoting European citizenship through the legacy of Alexander Langer, led by Sabina Langer and Nazario Zambaldi. The productions—one political and European, the other ecological and global—are realized in collaboration with Teatro delle Albe and the non-scuola theatre project of Ravenna.

The Forum Langer project takes inspiration from the final years of Alexander Langer’s life, particularly the initiative of the Verona Forum, created as a “parliament of peace”👉 https://www.alexanderlanger.org/it/862/3662

With the involvement of schools, current political affairs—both European and international—will inform the participatory production "Europe Dies or Is Reborn in Sarajevo", drawing from Alexander Langer’s writings, especially on the Balkan crisis that defined his final years👉 https://www.alexanderlanger.org/de/34/163

This evolving production will be enriched by the contexts it encounters, incorporating testimonies and “stagings” with those who knew Langer, practiced his ideas, or continue his work in various forms. Starting in South Tyrol, the collaboration with Ravenna and Reggio Emilia already sets a synergy between theatrical arts and pedagogy, coordinated by Alessandro Argnani, Sabina Langer, and Nazario Zambaldi. The project is expected to continue in cities like Bologna, Turin, Rome, and Trieste—and potentially expand across borders to Bosnia, Kosovo, and beyond.
